The main characteristic differences are appearance. Paly's have pointy skirts where zoa's have rounded almost bubbletip like. Palys are larger in size when full grown. Its become a trend lately to call zoanthus gigantus species palys when in fact they are not. Thats one of my pet peeves, lol. Palys are often referred to as sand polyps because they take in sand (no known reason why) where as zoa's do not. Palys cannot get zoa pox, thats limited to zoa's. Hope this helps...

The last pic, the brown and green with the pointy skirt are palys, the others are zoa's.
