I don't know the details of your HOB refugium, but my refugium allows my chaeto to grow about as big as a basketball. I think this larger chaeto ball plays a pretty big role in competing for the tank's nutrients, and keeps nuisance algae out of the scenario.

I go without any mechanical filtration at all except my skimmer. Works for me. My water movement causes my detritus to accumulate in about 3 areas, which I siphon off during water changes.

I have maybe 70 lbs of LR, and I think the tank could accomodate at least another 40 or 50 lbs.
