As for siphoning You are not supposed to get water on your mouth (:
I have never been made ill but i did wonder if someone has been hurt by one of the stinging animals. How painful was the lionfish Tang? Could the ER do anything for you?

I wonder if anyone else has been hurt by such animals?

Its happened to me twice with these fish.. One was a pet I had for a few yrs and I bumped it while messing around as he/her/it liked to chase my hand as it though it would fine food . The 1st was on my inside Forearm just below the elbow . Man It hurt!!!! Stung like craze then the Burn and then my arm went limp almost could not lift Got sick to my stomach and then felt hot and cold sweaty feeling .. Hard to describe the feeling.. Like trying to explain the color Blue to a blind person (: It wore off next day just some swelling and tenderness in that local area .. Mine at home was on the hand wrist and not as bad . I figured it was tougher skin or maybe some resistance was made from the first sting a few yrs earlier ? The old Hot/warm water soak is highly over rated (: Its may have helped But I don't think so .

There was a smaller local Hospital I always went to LOL and they got to know me pretty well , I'm talking early 70's and nothing was really known about excotic mraine animals and there was no internet to search and not many book .. The exported used to put little red tags on the bags (: so we'd read up on what it was and how it hurt you ..

I saw the Frogspawn LOL rub soft skin up on a carpet anemone ): That will bring tears to many people eys make me say stuff even !

Daaaang Tangster! Those are some pretty amazing stories. I have a baby fuzzy dwarf lion and I completely rearranged my rockwork today and I made sure I was completely aware of where he was at all times. I didn't get stung and from the sound of it I'm VERY glad I didn't!

I was stung by my brain coral a few weeks ago. It didn't hurt as much as it scared the hell out of me. Felt more like it was just very very sticky.

I voted no, then realized that was wrong... I got a crazy red, itchy eye attack a week ago while testing the ammonia in my freshwater tank (I think I rubbed the test chemicals into my eye). I have also thrown up from sucking water down while trying to start a syphon (yes, I do it the old-fashioned way)!

Wild fish story...

Father was Navy surgeon stationed out in So. Pacific (Guam) back in late 60's.

Native fishermen when net fishing from shore would give fish head a quick bite to kill it quickly once caught.

Anyway, Dad had emergency call one night to deal with a native who when he went to bite fish, it jumped head first right down into his throat.

Of course it stuck and dorsal fin spines made it impossible to manually remove fish.

As I recall, it was a near death situation.

Moral I guess, use caution when starting a syphon in a tank with small fish. Can easily imagine it happening to self in Nano for instance.

A small damsel could easily make it up tube with same result occuring...or worse, a palytoxin loaded zoa...

Ouch...hurts just thinking about it.

--------

Palytoxin is an incredibly complex marine natural product containing 71 stereochemical elements. Palytoxin, isolated from soft coral (most notably, zoanthids), is considered to be one of the most toxic non-peptide substances known, second only to Maitotoxin.

Typical symptoms of palytoxin poisoning are angina-like chest pains, asthma-like breathing difficulties, tachycardia, unstable blood pressure, hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), and an electrocardiogram showing an exaggerated T wave. The onset of symptoms is rapid, and death usually follows just minutes after.

On the opposite side of this post, there are some natural reefs that are being devastated by herpes that they contracted from humans, no joke.

I don't mean cleaning your aquarium is a pain.

I mean...

Have you ever gotten sick and wondered if it was from cleaning your aquarium?

You can also state if you have gotten a rash from a coral or fish, etc.. if you like. Please provide what you've done to prevent it since.

I picked up a wicked sinus infection this week that I had to get antibiotics for. I kept going back to a couple days prior when I took a mouthful from the siphon cleaning my big filthy turtle tank. But who knows... what about you?
It is how I found this forum. I was in the tank, try'n to tune in my skimmer and then I got a rash on my face, arms, chest, well...lets just say, everywhere I touched..took some benadrel....hydrocortisone cream, as suggested by folks here on 3reef...all good.
Then I bought these..........

GLOVES! GLOVES! GLOVES!....I believe thats what was said.
