You may want to try to increase water flow to the star polyps to reduce the chances of detritus accumulating on the encrusting mat.
Not commonly found, but sometimes the star polyps mat will show signs of neucrosis. If this happens the mat will fall apart like a wet piece of bread...the best way to describe it! The best way to avoid this spreading is to cut out the effected area by cutting into the health part of the mat and get rid of it by syphoning it out. This will remove the bad section and the star polyp will regrow.
Try an addition of iodine as well!!!!
