I have used a RO unit from home depot for over a year and it has worked well for me.... but my tap is some of the best water in the world, so I have been told... Chicago water! It's a 3 stage with a 2.5 gal reservoir and nice chrome outlet... I do detect a slight amount of nitrates in the RO water that worried me about build up from top offs but my NO3 never has gone over 5mg/l.... I do use Nitrate removal media about every 3 months tho. I have just recently upgraded tho to a 4 stage RO/DI unit with an auto top off system... Now I just tested that RO/DI water and the NO3 is absolutely 0. So the HD unit will do but the 4 stage RO/DI will do better.

As far as using straight tap... lol Why take that chance? I know I wouldn't with over $5k worth of coral! BTW I love my coral and fish even tho they don't always love me back...lol
