Who told you that I wonder? We drill our own but my lfs only charges about $25 per hole drilled. As long as the glass that you're drilling isn't tempered and you're using the proper tools, you should have no problems whatsoever. The smaller the tank, however, the thinner the glass so that $10 small tank might crack a lot easier than, say, a more expensive 55 gallon tank.
