Just my thoughts.
I say no.
If you do it can become clogged and thus will reduce your flow.
If in a sump or fuge, and depending on the design only tiny bits of junk will get in anyways and those should not hurt your pump at all when it goes through.
The positives however are to keep anything away from the pump that could clogged it or to create another area for beneficial bacteria.
