There really isn't any exact formula as everyones tank is different as far as set-up in concerned. The more live rock and coral you have the more crucial it is to have stronger water flow to get through and around these areas where waterflow is hindered. It will not hurt you if you have more water flow than required as long as the powerhead isn't facing directly on a coral causing stress and the polyps to not open.
