Default Brittle Star losing legs mysteriously

the story of my starfish is like this: i bought it about a month ago w/ only 3 legs, the other 2 were growing in. now, i came home from work tonight to discover one of his legs is just hanging out about an inch away from him. other mysterious behaviour is that the star has been spending a lot of time upside down.

if anyone has any clue as to what my star is doing, please give me some insight.
