Default Modification to Durso Standpipe

I was wondering if the modification below would work?!...because of the relative height of the waterlevel in a standard overflow using the standard Durso design, wouldn't there be an issue regarding the turnover of water at the bottom of the overflow?

I do not have my tank running yet but wanted to know if anyone has tried or is will to try such a modifcation. I think the lower intake would need to be smaller than the upper, but I am not sure.

Any engineers out there willing to help out on this?!? Sorry about the poor quality of the schematic....
