You said it looks like a fern? If so then the blades must look like feathers on a bird. If so than you my have one of to types of macroalgae.

Caulerpa ashmeadii- Feathery blades, young shoots are light green in color but darken when they get older.

Caulerpa mexicana- Blades are also feather like, but are smaller and more compact. The blades are flattened and not as broad as Caulerpa ashmeadii.

As with just about any type of macro, you should be able to cut it and rubber-band it to a different piece of liverock. Hope this helps out.
