The common practice is 4 to 5 watts per gallon.. But like the lighting 5 watts per gallon rule of thumb does not always work  Is it a lot colder in the room where you want to heat your tank to 80 degrees or is it almost always close to the temperature you like?? Some people also recomend 2 heaters instead of one in case if failure.
