If you want to do the conversion.....you can. I would just put the return pump in the slanted side. Maybe you could hang the skimmer off the back of the bioball side. You would just have to add enough water to fill it some more but no enough to overflow it if power fails.
Take the bioballs out a little at a time. I have my hose from the overflow completely under water at the end so I don't hear that. Got rid of the drip plate, and prefilter and all that mess.
