8 inches is too high. Try trimming you're mangroves a bit. remember that only the bottom third of the pod needs to be submerged in the water, but that after the pod has rooted and sprouted leaves then you can sink your pod and leave only the leaves and the top part of the mangrove to be exposed to air.
You could also look into some sort of supplemental lighting like a second PC lamp that you can hang at 8 inches while your mangroves grow around your other PC lamp shedding light onto your Macro algae. _________ &&&&20 Gal. , Millenium 1000 & 2000 filter, 130watt Corallife 50/50 reef lamp.
